In her square-format, medium-focal-length pictures of unnamed girls, Dutch photographer Hellen van Meene strives to compose "photographs 

Her photos are in the collection of many prominent museums, including Guggenheim New Yor Dutch artist Hellen van Meene is widely known for her distinctive style of photographic portraiture and her exceptional use of light. In her timeless photographs, young women and men are depicted as if they were under some sort of spell, stuck between their vulnerability and discomfort, as well as a latent sense of solemn grace. Hellen van Meene: Yes, I studied art in Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and I followed three years of photography. And, to be really strict, I am the photographer. I do not feel like a painter or something else, but I do have something in common with painting. Van Meene is a Dutch photographer whom predominantly photographed girls in their adolescence especially girls; which was good suggestion to have when I am interested in photographing women with a painterly quality that Meene implores within her light source on location and I would like to mention the portraits are Google Arts & Culture features content from over 2000 leading museums and archives who have partnered with the Google Cultural Institute to bring the world's treasures online. Hellen van Meene (Alkmaar, 1972) graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam in 1996 and has worked as an autonomous photographer ever since. Her international breakthrough came with her intimate portraits of young girls teetering on the threshold between childhood and adulthood.

Pol's Hoogte, TV Noord-Holland's weekly cultural magazine, featured an interview by Andrea van Pol with Hellen van Meene in the episode aired Thursday 21 Sep 2002-01-15 Hellen van Meene is a photographer based in The Netherlands. Her latest work in The Years Shall Run Like Rabbits, is on view at Yancey Richardson Gallery in New York from November 8, 2013 Hellen van Meene (The Netherlands, born 1972) was herself barely out of girlhood when she began to photograph adolescent girls whom she knew, or found, in her home town of Alkmaar in the north of Holland. Although she was at the time a student at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, Van Meene has said, “I sometimes feel like a magician.” Hellen van Meene’s exhibit “Five” opens at the Yancey Richardson Gallery in Chelsea on December 10th. The New Yorker offers a Hellen van Meene: Five. December 10 – January 23, 2016.
